from bell hooks:
Feminist Theory from Margin to Center: "Living as we did - on the edge - we developed a particular way of seeing reality. We looked both from the outside in and from the inside out. We focussed our attention on the center as well as the margin. We understood both."

If this quote doesn't remind me of Pathway, I don't know what would. The whole idea of "living on the edge" is not something that has disappeared from my being since sitting in the classroom of Betwixt and Between. I think the whole concept of looking at something from the outside and the inside can be interpreted literally/physically as well as metaphorically/emotionally.
For example, one can feel as if she is on the complete outer circle of a particular group, a majority. One can also feel like she is on the inside of a particular group, the majority, looking outwards at those individuals that are not like her. This is what high school was like for me.
However, I think that Bell Hooks is aiming for a deeper, more metaphorical meaning here. I feel as if a person can see with their eyes and see with their soul. The eyes can only tell a person what something appears to be, but the soul can peer deeper into the inner workings of that person, place, thing, etc. The soul is sometimes what tells us how something work, why something exists, or why their is pain in the eyes of the individual returning you gaze.
