Here's a word from bell hooks' Feminist Theory: From the Margins to the Center that seems pertinent to our study of Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (and written by hooks about 100 years later: "Living as we did - on the edge - we developed a particular way of seeing reality.
