Use Foucault's statement as a lens for thinking about Kincaid's novel:
"One writes in order to become other than what one is."

Perhaps Kincaid has put together this novel, which I still believe has some autobiographical undertones, to escape herself. Maybe she does not have the characteristics of Xuela. Maybe she has submitted to love, and is still on the meaningless search for happiness in life. Perhaps she wants to think like Xuela sometimes. Perhaps she wants to believe in life's only certainty: death. Could that be why she has put together this piece of fiction?
